Disability is one of the major social and economic problems in Bangladesh. There is no reliable data available regarding people with disabilities, and different sources provide varying statistics. According to the Household Income and Expenditure Survey 2010, the disability rate among the total population is 9.1%, while the 2011 National Census reports it as 1.7%. There is a growing realization in Bangladesh that the main barriers faced by children with disabilities are not their impairments themselves, but rather widespread discrimination and superstition.
